Boom & Bust: America’s Journey on the Erie Canal

The H. Lee White Maritime Museum at Oswego is proud to host Dr. Dan Ward as part of its 2017 History Lecture Series on Saturday, June 24th at 1:30 pm. Ward is a co-producer of “Boom and Bust: America’s Journey on the Erie Canal,” a documentary that tells the story of industrial expansion and decline along the Erie Canal. After a screening of the film, Ward will discuss his upcoming journey with fellow co-producer, Steve Zeitlin, who will be traveling by canal boat from Brooklyn to Buffalo screening “Boom and Bust” in canal ports large and small along the way in celebration of the bicentennial of the Erie Canal’s construction.    

 

Ward is an historian, folklorist and film maker based in Syracuse, NY. He is also a member of the Board of the Canal Society of New York State and serves as the Education Curator for the Canal Society’s newly-opened Old Erie Canal Heritage Park at Port Byron, NY. He holds a Master’s degree from the Cooperstown Graduate Program and a PhD in American Culture from Bowling Green State University. Mercedes Niess, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum stated “we have a long history of successful projects with Dan Ward, and are excited to feature him in our exceptional 2017 lineup of speakers.”

 

The Maritime Museum’s History Lecture Series will also be featuring notable lighthouse author Ted Panayotoff on Saturday, August 5th at 1:30 pm. Panayotoff, longtime Maritime Museum and Oswego Lighthouse supporter, will be presenting on aids-to-navigation along the New York State Canal System, continuing with the Museum’s canal themed lineup.

 

The Maritime Museum is partnering with the City of Oswego to host a one act play written by local playwright, Richard Sivers. The Oswego Canal Play will take place on Friday August 17th at 8pm. The story will focus on early Oswego Canal life in the 1830’s. This event is also part of the Erie Canal celebration.

 

This event is free and open to the public. The Maritime Museum and Treasure Chest Gift Shop are open daily, 1-5 pm with expanded hours from 10-5 pm in July and August. New Underground Railroad History Book Now Available

 

There is a direct connection between the Underground Railroad and the Canals of New York. Many African Americans used the Canals as routes for escaping from Slavery. The canals gave some the pathway to Freedom, many others settled in canal towns throughout the Canal Corridor. Safe houses existed in many communities and a new book has just been released about the Underground Railroad and the importance that Wayne County played at that time in history.

Cruising the Erie Canal from Lyons

On Saturday August 26 and Sunday, August 27, The Lyons Rotary and the Lyons Erie Canalway Greeters are sponsoring 3 Erie Canal Cruises. Passengers will travel aboard the 48 passenger Seneca Lake Reel Tours tour boat and will depart from the Lyons dock behind the fire Department Building.

On Saturday, narrated tours of 1 ½ hours will leave the dock at 4 and 7 PM. Heading west, passengers will experience 2 locks and have a “from the water view” of the location of the former NYS Canal Corp Port, the original Clinton’s Ditch, the Hotchkiss Essential Oil Peppermint Museum, Dobbin’s Park and the first Mural Mania, the Enlarged Erie aqueduct remains, the NYS Canal Corp Drydock, and the location of the double chambered Lock E 56 and canal store. Passengers will also receive a short instruction on the operation of Locks!

Heading east, passengers will then view the former Chevron Asphalt Barge landing, last used in 1990, view the location of a recently sunken sailboat, and see Creagers’s Bridge from the water. A cash bar, beverages, and munchies will be available. Ticket prices are $20.00 adult and $15.00 child for the 4 PM cruise, and $25.00 per person for the adult 7 PM cruise.

On Sunday, the narrated cruise will leave the dock at 10:00 AM and cruise to Stiver’s Seneca Marine, adjacent to the Crow’s Nest. Passengers will experience 3 canals- the Erie Barge, The Seneca, and the Cayuga- Seneca. They will “lock through” 6 locks, including the double lock in Seneca Falls.

On Sunday, passengers will travel west from Lyons, cruise under Creager’s Bridge, cruise under the lowest bridge on the Western Erie Canal just east of Clyde, cruise through the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge, witness Bald Eagle nests, see the world famous Richmond/ Montezuma Aqueduct remains, glide across Van Cleef Lake, view the world famous Trinity Church, and pass under Bailey’s Bridge, featured in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

A cash bar, beverages, and munchies will be available. Cruise will last approximately 4 ½ hours. A continental breakfast and return transportation to Lyons are included in the ticket price of $65.00 per person….   • Canal Crossings Street Murals- Head to E. Water Street by the Erie Canal Museum for the opening Block Party of a contemporary public art project that celebrates the historic Erie Canal and brings tribute to the lasting effect the canal has had in Central New York.

Canal NY is once again planning to attend the NY Times Travel Show- January 26-28th.  

 

This enormous consumer show brings in over 10,000 people from the New York City and surrounding areas including, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.   This year, our booth is #1044. We will be next to Corning and the Finger Lakes and Rockland County. All isles will be branded with the ILNY logo and signs.

Sponsorship Levels for  NY Times Travel Show 2017

  • $1000 for TPAsand $750 for museums, businesses and small communities: Your organization/business will be featured in Itineraries, brochures, promotion, panel discussion and ask the experts, and highlighted Power Point and scrolling photo presentation if applicable. At this level, you will receive a listing of tour operators, media and consumers interested in the Canal
  • $500 TPAs– brochures at table
  • $300museums, business and small communities- brochures at table
  • If a TPA, museum or business wants to send a representative to help man the booth for a full two days(Saturday 1/28 and Sunday 1/29)- TPAS will receive $300 off their sponsorship costs and business will receive $100 off their sponsorship costs.  Space is limited for this option.

This year we expect to do the following at the Show

  1. Have itineraries developed for each of our Canalway regions featuring our members
  2. Participate in a panel discussion to consumers
