The USS Slater begins her 20th year afloat in Albany NY

The USS Slater is open to the public for the ship’s 20the season. Since she first arrived in Albany, the USS Slater has been described as one of the best restored, most historically accurate World War II ships in the world. A National Historic Landmark, the USS Slater is the only remaining World War II Destroyer Escort afloat today in the US.

Destroyer Escorts originally were designed to battle Nazi U-Boats while escorting conveys across the Atlantic. There versatility proved useful in the Pacific defending task forces from Kamikaze attacks. Numerous Destroyer Escorts continued to serve during the Korean and Vietnam wars. The current US Navy Fleet’s Frigates are descendants of these small ships.

Palmyra NY Harbor Hosts

Welcome to Palmyra!  That is the message of the Palmyra Harbor Hosts to visitors who tie up at the Port of Palmyra on the Erie Canal. Now in their fifth year , the Harbor Hosts (HH), volunteers from Palmyra and Macedon, have worked with hundreds of visitors from all over the state, the country and the world, answering questions and, frequently, going above and beyond providing needed transportation.

HH have given visitors rides to Walmart for a variety of needs; gone in search of a specific kind of worm to catch a specific kind of fish; to Rite Aid for an Rx refill or to an animal hospital. They have provided directions to the library, a children’s playground, grocery store,  Chill ‘n’ Grill ice cream shop and the laundromat. HH know which restaurants deliver to the marina; the hours of the museums – Palmyra has six. They know what time the adjacent rest rooms open and close and much more. Palmyra HH know just about all there is to know about our small but beautiful and historic village   (200+ properties on the National Register) and they love to share that information with our visitors. The New York State Canal Corporation named the Palmyra Harbor Hosts New York State Canal Ambassadors in recognition of their service to the Village of Palmyra and New York State. We are proud of that.

Boom & Bust: America’s Journey on the Erie Canal

The H. Lee White Maritime Museum at Oswego is proud to host Dr. Dan Ward as part of its 2017 History Lecture Series on Saturday, June 24th at 1:30 pm. Ward is a co-producer of “Boom and Bust: America’s Journey on the Erie Canal,” a documentary that tells the story of industrial expansion and decline along the Erie Canal. After a screening of the film, Ward will discuss his upcoming journey with fellow co-producer, Steve Zeitlin, who will be traveling by canal boat from Brooklyn to Buffalo screening “Boom and Bust” in canal ports large and small along the way in celebration of the bicentennial of the Erie Canal’s construction.    

 

Ward is an historian, folklorist and film maker based in Syracuse, NY. He is also a member of the Board of the Canal Society of New York State and serves as the Education Curator for the Canal Society’s newly-opened Old Erie Canal Heritage Park at Port Byron, NY. He holds a Master’s degree from the Cooperstown Graduate Program and a PhD in American Culture from Bowling Green State University. Mercedes Niess, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum stated “we have a long history of successful projects with Dan Ward, and are excited to feature him in our exceptional 2017 lineup of speakers.”

 

The Maritime Museum’s History Lecture Series will also be featuring notable lighthouse author Ted Panayotoff on Saturday, August 5th at 1:30 pm. Panayotoff, longtime Maritime Museum and Oswego Lighthouse supporter, will be presenting on aids-to-navigation along the New York State Canal System, continuing with the Museum’s canal themed lineup.

 

The Maritime Museum is partnering with the City of Oswego to host a one act play written by local playwright, Richard Sivers. The Oswego Canal Play will take place on Friday August 17th at 8pm. The story will focus on early Oswego Canal life in the 1830’s. This event is also part of the Erie Canal celebration.

 

This event is free and open to the public. The Maritime Museum and Treasure Chest Gift Shop are open daily, 1-5 pm with expanded hours from 10-5 pm in July and August. What’s New At Canal NY

As the holiday season approaches, Canal NY is busy planning for 2018. Our open meeting held on Oct. 30th in Waterford at the Erie Canalway Heritage Organizations’ visitor center was a great success.  The meeting was well attended and with three employees of the NYS Canal Corp in attendance, it provided the opportunity to ask questions as well as listen to what the Canal Corporation had to say about their first year under control of the New York Power Authority and what we could expect moving forward.  This was a great opportunity for the board to listen to existing membership from that portion of the state as well as having the ability to meet some potential new members who were in attendance.  We will be back in the eastern region again in 2018!

The board held a conference call meeting on Nov. 15th. There was a full agenda for the board to consider during that meeting and first up was elections of officers. Continuing in their current positions were

Treasurer           Peter Wiles

Secretary           The position is still open, Mercedes Niess has offered to assist the organization during

                           her off season

Board Members, Vicky Daly and Marie Cramer have been busy updating the organizations by-laws and mission statement.

A new Mission Statement was offered and approved by the board. There are still some ongoing discussions regarding potential changes to the By-Laws .

The board has also agreed to re-create the existing Canal NY web site, this should be completed during the first quarter of 2018

With the hard work of Marketing Committee chairperson Lori Solomon, Canal NY will once again be attending the NY Times Travel show. In addition, the marketing committee has developed a list of marketing programs that members can participate in for 2018. The complete list including levels of participation will be included in your dues notices being mailed out this month.

Update on the www.discovertheeriecanal.com project. Directories have been completed for all the major communities along the Canal. We are entering the next phase of the project and that relates to content. Articles are being added to the site relating to both communities as well as activities such as boating the Canal, biking and driving through the Canal Corridor.

We want to promote your organization on the site. We need your help to accomplish this goal, we can publish virtually an unlimited amount of content, pictures, videos and information about events etc.

If you like parades, fireworks, concerts, food, car shows and small-town charm then you want to be in Lyons NY from July 13th – July 15th. 2018. Lyons celebrates its heritage as the Peppermint Capital of the world. In 1841 E.G. Hotchiss located his essential oils business to Lyons where he processed the locally grown peppermint plants into oils and other related products.

Lyons is the county seat of Wayne County, the village is full of historical buildings and architecture, six village properties are listed on the NYS and National Register of Historic Places. It is also a “Main Street USA” designated village.

Spencerport Canal Days Celebrates 37 Years!!

Don’t miss this free, family oriented festival located in the quaint village of Spencerport. There’s plenty to see and enjoy, including unique arts and crafts vendors, delicious food, outstanding live entertainment, and a delectable wine tasting area with farm market stands selling fresh produce and honey. Enjoy a carriage ride on some of Spencerport’s scenic streets. Visit the car show at the American Legion on Trimmer Road where over 200 cars will be on display. Take your children to The Depot Museum where they can play historic games or make a rag doll.

Free parking will be available (TBA), where free shuttles will take you to and from the festival site.

The festival will be open 10 am – 5 pm Saturday, July 28th and Sunday, July 29th.

Built to be the “Tourism Site of The Erie Canal” The site will differ from any other online presence regarding the Erie Canal. This site is built upon the idea that what makes the Erie Canal so great are the more than 200 communities that make up the canal corridor. Each community will have the ability to promote itself within the umbrella of the overall site.

On Sept. 27th Canal NY held a media luncheon. This year’s event was held at Pier A, an historic restaurant located in Battery Park City, overlooking NY Harbor. The event was attended by over 30 travel writers and journalists who enjoyed a great meal and presentations by or member sponsors. One of the first known benefits from the event was a live radio interview that I could participate in with Dan Schlosberg the host of Travel Itch radio. Harborfest Oswego NY

Oswego’s Harborfest is a four-day festival which takes place each year on the last full weekend in July and is typically attended by more than 100,000 visitors.

Since its founding in 1988 Harborfest has brought to its stages more than 600 national, regional and local performing artists. The event is spread over 5 different venues throughout the city with shuttle bus service available throughout the event.

This year Harborfest will include more than 50 musical acts, and this year the Harborfest Midway will be returning and so will the classic carnival favorite, the Ferris wheel. Oswego’s own Ferris Wheel Supper Club has offered to sponsor the popular attraction that is sure to draw crowds all weekend long. Strates Shows, America’s only railroad carnival, travels the United States during a seven-month season, transporting personnel and equipment with 61 rail cars and 34 trucks. Traveling with the show are some 400 employees and families who operate the rides, games and concessions. The show and its legacy have been a fixture of Central NY for over six decades and continues the grand tradition with its third trip to Harborfest.
