Cayuga/Seneca Canals

The Cayuga Seneca Canal connects the largest of the two finger lakes to the Erie Canal, first opened in 1832 it received its final update and in 1915 was opened in its current configuration.

Connecting with the Erie at mile marker 200, the C/S Canal travels 4 miles south to Lock C/S 1 where it allows you to either continue 42 miles south on Cayuga Lake passing communities such as Cayuga, Union Springs, Aurora and onto Ithaca or travel west on the Seneca River through the historic communities of Seneca Falls and Waterloo before the canal gives way to the open waters of Seneca Lake.  At 38 miles, long and with a maximum depth of 618’ deep, Seneca Lake is the deepest lake completely within NYS.  It’s also the self-proclaimed Lake Trout Capital of the world and the micro-climate that surrounds both lakes makes it the perfect home for the more than 50 wineries that line their banks.

The Lake is so deep that the US Navy has a permanent facility anchored on the lake that is used for deep water research.

A trip to the south end of the lake brings you to Watkins Glen, and then into Catherine Creek one of the two inlets of the lake.  Montour Falls lies 3 miles to the south of Watkins Glen with a nice marina and campground available to explore the region from.

Palmyra Harbor Host Program

A SUMMER SNAPSHOT:

PALMYRA HARBOR HOST PROGRAM

2017 – Season Five

Despite a shortened season and less than excellent weather, a 14% increase in the boat count, 135 in 2016, 156 this year, was noted. Many of our visitors had docked here before, often several times. The presence of the Lois McClure during its state wide tour and the Sam Patch during Pirates Weekend boosted the season’s people count to 527, a remarkable number.

Also noted was the use of the marina for fishing, dog walking and simply enjoying the view. It also appears to be a stop for tour busses. Taking into consideration that the marina is open dawn to dusk every day and that Harbor Hosts are there a maximum of 6 hours a day, these are impressive numbers.

There are two crucial components that make this service continue: the support of local merchants and organizations and the Harbor Hosts, who represent Palmyra for our visitors. Participating this season were the following merchants:

  • Akropolis Family Restaurant
  • Brick House Antique Center/ Rug Center
  • Custom 31 Tee Shirts
  • Dog Eared Book
  • Gallery of Styles
  • Happiness Garden Chinese Restaurant
  • Hill Cumorah & Other Historic Sites
  • Lock 29 Grill & Tap Room
  • Mackenzie’s
  • Mark’s Pizzeria
  • Nima’s Italian Restaurant
  • Palmyra Canal Shop
  • Pop’s Hots
  • Towpath Antique Center
  • Village Bookmarket

Support was provided by:

  • Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission and Foundation
  • Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site
  • Museums of Historic Palmyra
  • New York State Canal Corporation
  • Village of Palmyra
  • Wayne County Office of Tourism

Without the Harbor Hosts themselves there would be no program. They make it happen.

  • Michael Braell Josie Naeye
  • Bob Daly Patti Rising
  • Vicky Daly John Robbins
  • Barbara Furgeson Mary Ann Stager
  • Carole Hack Deb Trombino
  • Sparky Hall        Pat Wilson
  • Marsha Herbst

This year we were pleased to have the assistance of twelve LDS couples who were in Palmyra as volunteers at the Mormon Temple. While in Palmyra they are expected to donate time and energy to local worthwhile efforts. We were pleased to be perceived as such. This season was a learning experience but it went well and their time and enthusiasm were appreciated. They would be welcome again in 2018 as would additional local volunteers.

Thank you, one and all.

We could not do this without you.

Art Contest at Schoharie Crossing!

The Friends of Schoharie Crossing are inviting painters residing in New York State to showcase their work in a competitive, juried exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is Lock in the Fun: Recreation at Schoharie Crossing.

To recognize the centennial of the NYS Barge Canal, Schoharie Crossing will be hosting this second annual exhibition of talented artists in the newly renovated Visitor Center. This year the focus will be on paintings only. Jurors have accepted the task of reviewing the artwork and prizes will be awarded to those honored by the jurors.

The Erie Canal historic site and NYS Park is a great place for recreation such as walking, cycling, kayaking, fishing, birdwatching, picnics, and more. The site supplies views of nature as well and the historic canal structures are juxtaposed among the natural world of plants and animals along the Schoharie Creek and Mohawk River. The trails along old towpaths of the canal allow for a journey back in time. Flora and fauna thrive within the waterways, wetlands and open spaces of Schoharie Crossing, lending great inspiration for any artist.

Schoharie Crossing encompasses over two hundred acres and spans over three miles in length. From the western end of the site at the Aqueduct boat launch, across the Schoharie Creek and east to Yankee Hill Lock and the Putman Canal Store. The site contains portions of the original 1820’s Erie Canal as well as features two sets of double locks from the Enlarged Era Canal and is adjacent to the Erie Canal of today; the Mohawk River. Lock E12 at Tribes Hill on the river is situated close to the site and provides access to witnessing the newest century old canal of today.

The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2018 and submissions can be made online. The exhibit’s opening celebration will take place during the Schoharie Crossing Canal Days festivities, July 14th and 15th, 2018, and artwork will be displayed through August. For more information on how to enter, visit the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site page of the New York State Parks website, call Schoharie Crossing at (518) 829-7518, or email [email protected]
