The Wayne County Historical Society is dedicated to inspiring appreciation for the rich and diverse history of Wayne County, New York. Through the collection, preservation, and promotion of historical artifacts, stories, and landmarks, we strive to educate and engage both residents and visitors, fostering a strong connection to our shared heritage.
The Museum is housed in the former Wayne County Jail and Sheriff’s residence, built in 1855 and used until 1960. Two large cellblocks remain intact, featuring 18 original individual cells with inmate artwork and graffiti. Visitors will also learn about the sheriff and local government that maintained order in the new county from 1823 to today. In addition, the “big house” museum features three floors of exhibits, including the main Evan gallery which has annual themed exhibits, and ongoing exhibits such as the stunning Lyons Pottery & Clyde Glass Gallery, the Military Room showcasing artifacts from the French and Indian War through Desert Storm with a special focus on the Civil War-era, the Commerce Room with artifacts from local businesses, and cultural rooms such as the Boehmler Children’s’ room, the Women of Wayne Room, Indigenous Peoples Exhibit, Weaving Room, and old Kitchen. Our Carriage House features two-stories and 11 more exhibits ranging from farming to shipwrecks.
*2025 Evans Gallery (our main attraction for the year) showcases Wayne County artifacts that help tell the story of the construction and use along our 35 miles of the Erie Canal. Capture the Erie Canal will be open from April 18 – November 1.
Located at 21 Butternut Street in Lyons, the museum is a short walk from Erie Canal Lock #27 and the Lyons town square.
